Layer guide

What each layer on the map shows and how to use it.

🕰️ Historical Maps

Historical maps from different periods, for tracing how the area has changed:

  • • 1904 Taiwan Baotu (cadastral survey) - A topographic map from the early Japanese colonial period, showing major watercourses such as the Liu-kong-tsun Canal.
  • • 1921 Topographic Map - A survey from the mid-colonial period, by which time irrigation infrastructure had become more established.
  • • 1939 Liu-kong-tsun Irrigation District Map - A detailed record of the Liu-kong-tsun Canal's irrigation area, showing the layout of its watercourses.
  • • 1944 US Military Topographic Map - A wartime topographic survey recording the hydrological conditions of the time.
  • • 1989 Topographic Map - Topography after modern urbanisation, by which point many watercourses had been culverted or rerouted.

Observations on hydrological change:

By comparing maps from different periods you can see how the land and waterways here have changed over time.

🛰️ Satellite imagery

Live satellite imagery and environmental indices:

• Esri satellite imagery

High-resolution satellite imagery showing the actual landscape.

• Sentinel-2 true colour

The most recent true-colour satellite imagery, close to what the eye would see.

• Sentinel-2 vegetation index (NDVI)

Measures vegetation health and density. Colours correspond to:

Red - Sparse or no vegetation (dry ground / buildings)
Yellow - Moderate vegetation
Green - Dense vegetation (healthy / moist)

• Sentinel-2 moisture index (MOISTURE-INDEX)

Measures moisture content in soil and vegetation. Colours correspond to:

Orange-red - Very dry (water-deficient)
Yellow - Moderate moisture
Cyan - Moist
Dark blue - Very moist (water bodies / high moisture content)

🌳 Open data layers

Taipei City open data:

  • • Street tree shade - Street tree canopy coverage (roadside trees only, not including parks)
  • • Parks and woodland - Area-based green space such as parks, grass and woodland, filling gaps in the street-tree data
  • • Pavement extent - Walkable pavement areas
  • • Urban planning zones - Urban planning zones

🌡️ Temperature layer

A live temperature distribution map showing the urban heat island effect and temperature variation.

🚶 Routes and stops

Two walking routes:

  • • Route 1 - Baroque Garden → Sweetgum Avenue → Songshan Hub → Creative Street → Xinren Village Farm

Songshan Cultural and Creative Park

The park began in 1937, under Japanese rule, as the Songshan Tobacco Factory of the Taiwan Governor-General Monopoly Bureau. After 1945 the Monopoly Bureau took it over and renamed it the Songshan Tobacco Factory of the Taiwan Provincial Monopoly Bureau, making cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products.

Production stopped in 1998, when the factory was merged into the Taipei Cigarette Factory. In 2001 the Taipei City Government designated the site its 99th municipal historic site, and it was named Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. Once Taiwan's first modern cigarette factory, and a major contributor to the economy, it opened to the public on 15 November 2011 and became a base for original creative work in Taiwan.

From the beginning the factory was planned as an "industrial village": beyond the flow of production, it catered for the welfare and needs of its staff and kept large open spaces for gardens, a pioneering approach for factory buildings of its time.

Its architecture belongs to early Japanese Modernism, with an emphasis on horizontal lines, simple and elegant forms and fine workmanship, a model for the industrial buildings of the period.

The boiler room, machine repair shop, cigarette factory and workshops were completed in 1939, and cigarette production began that October with about 1,200 staff. The office building and inspection rooms followed in 1940; the whole site took three years and three months to complete.
